AI Agents vs Chatbots: The Difference That Actually Matters
· 5 min read
Chatbots answer. Agents plan and act using tools. Here is how to tell them apart and when each is the right choice for a business.
One produces text, one produces outcomes
A chatbot maps input to output in a single step. An agent decomposes a goal, chooses tools, executes steps, checks results and adapts. The visible difference is that an agent's run has a history: steps, tool calls and artefacts.
When a chatbot is the better answer
For single questions, drafting and brainstorming, agents add latency and complexity for no benefit. Use agents when the work is multi-step, touches files or systems, or has to repeat reliably.
What makes agents trustworthy
Observability. If you cannot see the plan, the current step and the tools being called, you cannot delegate anything that matters.
